Life Beyond TraumaLife Beyond Trauma promotes yoga-based solutions to those suffering the devastating effects that traumatic experiences can leave.
Traumatic events change the brain, impacting the body, mind and spirit. Yoga is a holistic system that heals on all these levels, restoring physical and mental health by rebalancing the nervous system and giving tools to help regulate thinking, emotion and behaviour.
Life Beyond Trauma is dedicated to sharing the knowledge gained from more than a decade of providing yoga to war veterans, refugees and others with PTSD. It is a resource for trauma survivors, their loved ones, yoga teachers, health professionals and others interested in the healing effects of yoga on PTSD. Life Beyond Trauma activities

Helen Cushing (Ahimsa)![]() Life Beyond Trauma founder Helen Cushing (Ahimsa) has taught Satyananda Yoga to war veterans, refugees, war victims, family violence survivors, terrorism survivors and others with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma since 2004.
The results inspired her to share her knowledge and experience by offering yoga classes and retreats for trauma survivors, making a film, writing a book, giving talks and presentations to mental health workers, survivors of trauma and yoga teachers and practitioners around the world. Ahimsa has practised yoga since 1975 and has been teaching since 2003. Prior to this she worked in the media, including in writing, publishing and television. Ahimsa is a highly regarded teacher and presenter in Australia and internationally. After many years managing a busy yoga centre in Australia, Ahimsa lived in retreat at the Bihar School of Yoga, India from 2011-13. Working as an editor, photographer and senior teacher she immersed herself in the classical culture and tradition of yoga. Since returning to Australia Ahimsa has dedicated herself to sharing the benefits of yoga by founding Ganges Yoga, South Hobart Yoga & Meditation and Life Beyond Trauma. She travels widely, holding workshops and retreats around the world. |
"After more than a decade of teaching yoga to war vets and others with PTSD I know that yoga heals the scars of trauma. I've watched the symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression simply melt away from men and women who have spent years, even decades struggling to survive as their damaged nervous systems hijack normal life.
How do they finally recover? By regular practice of simple yoga techniques - that means easy yoga postures, basic yoga breathing, yoga nidra relaxation and meditation.
To spread this good news I've made an award-winning film, written a book and I'm presenting programs around the world on yoga for trauma recovery. It's time to share this knowledge so that individuals and communities everywhere can reclaim peaceful and productive lives."
