“Often I felt extremely sad and angry. I felt my heart could blow out, but when I started to practice yoga, when I finished the yoga class, everything had disappeared as if by magic. And also the tiredness of my body had disappeared.”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Drawing on an understanding of trauma, its effect on the nervous system, and simple techniques of yoga, mindfulness, relaxation and meditation Hope offers practical skills and tools that bring relief to the troubled body, mind and spirit.

With regular yoga practice the intensity of PTSD symptoms can be managed and significantly reduced, minimizing or eliminating the need for medication and psychiatric interventions, and restoring hope, dignity and quality of life.

From the foreword by Petrea King, founder of the Quest for Life Foundation.

“Ahimsa (Helen Cushing) has made a study of how yoga, mindfulness and meditation can help people with PTSD. Her experience is based on many years of working and teaching some of the most traumatised people in the world. This book shares a wealth of information as well as practical strategies for reclaiming your health and happiness. I commend it to you as a pathway home to your own essential nature and to profound and lasting peace.”

GLIMPSES INTO HOPE
extracts from the book

“This is not only a book for people interested in yoga, it is a book for people interested in recovery from trauma. Trauma is a peace-stealer; yoga is a peace-maker. Trauma can leave you stuck in a holding pattern; yoga creates change. Stuck trauma damages one’s relationships with life; yoga nurtures those relationships.”

“As those who have travelled the path from war to inner peace will attest, yoga works if you practise it, and every individual has a unique journey to travel. It is as simple as that. I do hope this book will inspire you to join us on that journey, step by step, towards hope, healing and new-found joy.”

WHY IS THIS BOOK SO IMPORTANT?

Survivors of war, natural disasters, rape, crime, torture, domestic violence, sexual, physical and psychological abuse, serious accidents and other horrifying events are susceptible to post-traumatic stress disorder. So are people in professions such as the military, fire fighters, paramedics, emergency workers, police officers, prison workers and psychologists.

Anyone subjected to an intensely threatening experience may find themselves trapped in this debilitating condition.

Always hyper alert, relaxation is impossible, nights are literally a nightmare, relationships fall apart. Alcohol, drugs and finally suicide can seem the only way out.
Medications can have unpleasant side effects that interfere with normal functioning and conventional psychological interventions are often limited in their success. Many health professionals feel that yoga is a worthwhile tool for people who have suffered trauma. Yoga heals the nervous system and brings people together in support of each other.
